Decyzja może doprowadzić do starcia z administracją federalną, która wcześniej usunęła flagę po nowych wytycznych ograniczających, jakie symbole mogą być wywieszane na terenach zarządzanych przez National Park Service.
– „Chodzi o widoczność i pamięć. Upamiętnienie dziedzictwa tych, którzy w 1969 roku stanęli do walki, wymaga działania, a nie milczenia” – podkreślił prezydent dzielnicy Manhattan, Brad Hoylman-Sigal.
Stonewall Inn stał się symbolem oporu społeczności LGBTQ+ po nalocie policji w czerwcu 1969 roku. Choć bar pozostaje prywatny, przylegający park jest pod jurysdykcją federalną od 2016 roku.
Przywrócenie flagi w centrum narodowego monumentu wzbudza debatę o tym, czy federalne zarządzanie miejscem może w pełni szanować jego historyczne znaczenie, ograniczając symbole, które je reprezentują.
Flagi tęczowe wciąż pozostają przy Stonewall Inn i centrum dla zwiedzających, które są własnością prywatną.
