“Twenty years ago when I came out, it was unbearably hard. As I have written before, I am from the Deep South. Anyone who dared to deviate from social norms was sure to be ostracized. It's not that these people were born hateful or mean; rather, it probably had more to do with them not being subjected to other lifestyles. Anything different from their own experiences sparked fear and confusion. Homosexuality, interracial relationships, religious differences – these were all unfamiliar territories to the average person I grew up around. Sure, it would be great if everyone lived in the kind of world where we didn't have to gauge whether it was safe enough to come out, but if we did, coming out wouldn't be necessary at all. . Coming out is an act of bravery and a declaration of self-love. It's telling the world you value yourself and your authenticity more than you value its social norms and expectations. I came out because I wanted the people in my life to have a chance at getting to know the real me, not the person I had tried to force myself to be for too many years. . I also did it for my kids. They deserve to have a dad who doesn't live in shame of who he is, who is proud of his uniqueness and queerness. I wanted to give them permission to live however they choose to live, and love whomever they choose to love. . When you look at it this way, coming out becomes much less about sexuality and more about connection and self-love. Everyone has a closet of social confines to come out of. Co rok 11 października w Stanach Zjednoczonych i nie tylko także w Polsce, obchodzony jest National Coming Out Day. Dzień ten ma upamiętniać marsz osób LGBT (lesbijki, geje, biseksualiści, osoby transpłciowe) na Waszyngton, który odbył się w 1987 roku i zgromadził ponad 500 tysięcy osób. Czas na ziemi jest krótki, żeby martwić się i walczyć kim naprawdę jesteśmy. Będziemy walczyć kim jesteśmy to zmarnujemy życie, na szczęście, martwić i nienawidzić się. Czas szybko leci dziś masz 20, jutro 30 lat, a zaraz będziesz mieć 60 lat, będziesz walczyć kim jesteś zmarnujesz żeby być szczęśliwy. Zrozumiesz że Bóg cie kocha i zaakceptujesz kim jesteś życie, będzie lepsze. Zachęcam was żeby wasze życie nie przeleciało na martwieniu się i brak akceptacji do siebie. Celem twojego życia nie jest walka kim jesteś. Bóg chce użyć, żeby zmieniać ten świat na lepszy. NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY: Straight friends, neighbors, and allies: Many of you may know that today is a very special day for those of us in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender & queer communities. Today is National Coming Out Day and for some of us it’s a day of celebration, others a day of reflection, and for most all of us, a day of solidarity. I wish you a Happy National Coming Out Day! I also want to give just a few suggestions in case you’re lucky enough to have someone come out to YOU today. You see, aside from just remembering and celebrating our coming out stories, today is a day when many #LGBTQ people begin to come out of the closet, and I want them to come out to YOU! First, congratulations. If you’re someone that a person feels that they can come out to, you’ve clearly done your job of letting those around you know that you’ve got strong convictions and solid values and that those include support - or at least consideration - for LGBTQ people. Thank you! Secondly, you’re not expected to know anything more about LGBTQ people than you did before this person came out to you. In fact, you may even learn that what you did know wasn’t exactly correct either. It’s okay! Really. Just take it slow, ask some questions, and keep in mind that none of us was immune to bullying, peer pressure, or insecurity. So be prepared to help a friend when they may need you most.
