#ProtectTransKids. Today, the White House is expected to roll back previous guidance put forward by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education to protect transgender students. This critical, life-saving guidance (which was requested by teachers and school administrators) is intended to ensure that trans students are treated fairly and with dignity in public schools, including having their names and pronouns respected, having their privacy preserved, and having equal access to restrooms and locker rooms. . I believe that schools should help open and enrich the minds of students by exposing them to diversity, not discriminate against some of their most vulnerable students. Students should feel supported to express themselves and their identities at school, so their focus can be on learning and development, not hiding their own identity for fear of discrimination or violence. . It's been repeatedly proven that trans youth are at increased risk of depression and suicide when they face discrimination at home and school. 75% of transgender students report feeling unsafe in school, according to a recent GLSEN report. 50% of transgender young people report attempting suicide at least once in their lifetime. This is a subject that transcends policy and politics - it is about affirming lives. . It's so important for us to stand with trans students, today and every day. I've had the honor of visiting high schools and GSAs across the country and met so many brilliant, passionate, resilient, incredible young trans and GNC students like Ella and Zoey. . To all the trans students reading this, I want you to know: Your identity is valid. You are valid. We see you. We’re here for you. We’ve got your back. There are so many people who love you and will continue advocating for your rights. Count me among them. .
