Edie Windsor, whose landmark Supreme Court case struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013 and granted same-sex married couples federal recognition for the first time, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. She was 88. Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, issued the following statement: “Today, we lost one of this country’s great civil rights pioneers, Edie Windsor. The wheels of progress turn forward because of people like Edie who are willing to stand up in the face of injustice. “One simply cannot write the history of the gay rights movement without reserving immense credit and gratitude for Edie Windsor. We were proud to stand with Edie when she took her fight on behalf of same-sex couples everywhere to the Supreme Court. “We mourn her today, as do all whom she touched in her incredible life. Edie always urged others not to ‘postpone joy.’ So even as we mourn this terrible loss, we also celebrate Edie, who set an example for all of us to follow.” #ediewindsor #marriageequality #lgbtq #lgbtrights #lgbtrightsactivist

Today, we lost an American hero and LGBTQ legend: Edith Windsor. Edie was the named plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013 and granted same-sex married couples federal recognition and rights for the first time. Edie was a matriarch for our LGBTQ family - a universally respected and loved activist who inspired everyone she met. . My friend @levijfoster and I had the chance to spend time with Edie in her apartment earlier this year. We took this portrait for Levi's campaign with @mhoffman and @lgbt_history to raise awareness about @sageusa, an incredible organization that encourages cross-generational dialogue in the LGBTQ community. Edie referenced our energy and enthusiasm several times throughout the conversation; and as we were about to leave, she pumped her fists and said, "Just keep going! Keep going." . I believe it is so important to celebrate and recognize the generations of LGBTQ people who have risked their reputations, livelihoods, and sometimes even lives, in order to make it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms and rights we do today. When I graduated from college, the commencement speaker shared some wisdom: "Don't act like you hit a home run when you were born on third base." While there is still a lot of important advocacy work ahead of us, I feel like I was born on third base thanks to the visibility and advocacy of people like Edie. . In honor of Edie, please take the time to get to know and express gratitude to a fellow member of our LGBTQ community who has helped make it possible for us to stand proud and visible today. The conversation and friendship with enrich you and uplift our community. . Edie, thank you for the gift you've given us all. We love you. 💔💛💚💙💜
