As we reflect on six months since the Pulse tragedy, I wanted to share this story with you about the importance of community. . I met Sergio and Mars at one of the memorials for those who lost their lives at Pulse, a few days after the attack. . Amidst a humid Florida afternoon drizzle, Sergio and Mars were tearfully embracing a group of their friends while watching over a particular section of the memorial - a section brightened by photos of the beautiful souls whose lives were senselessly cut short. I could immediately feel the devastation and knew that they had been personally impacted by this tragedy. I had trouble finding the right words to express just how sad and sorry I am for their pain, so I just walked over hugged them. . As we began talking, they told me about Amanda Alvear and Mercedes Flores, two of their friends who lost their lives. Amanda and Mercedes were model allies to the LGBTQ community. They celebrated life, made those around them feel included, and never missed an opportunity to show their friends that they care. Mars said he wouldn't be so out and proud if it wasn't for them. . Sergio was with them in Pulse that horrific night, but he is embracing the happy memories - their big smiles on the dance floor and the playful high five they gave him as he left Pulse, just minutes before the tragedy would begin to unfold. . While I listened to their beautiful descriptions of Amanda and Mercedes, the drizzles turned into heavy rain showers. Instinctively, everyone on the lawn ran under an awning for cover. But Mars and Sergio ran back into the pouring rain, unraveling a massive plastic tarp to protect all the cards, photos, and signs. As we saw what they were doing, a large group joined to help. . When the rain calmed down, I pulled out my rainbow flag, which I carried all around Orlando. As we unrolled the flag, I saw Sergio smile for the first time since I met him. For that flash of a moment, I think something about the flag - the bold colors of Pride, the iconic symbol of our movement - helped him experience a moment of comfort and peace. We need this. We are more than a community. We're a family. And that's something to take pride in.
