Human rights activist Elżbieta Podlesna was arrested in Poland for putting up posters (above) depicting the country’s most famous Catholic icon with the LGBT rainbow on the halos. Podlesna was arrested for violating a very loose set of "laws banning hostility against religious beliefs". _ What is ACTUALLY happening: The Human Rights Watch says this is simply "the latest attempt by Polish authorities to target LGBT and gender equality activists". TIME explains that "Poland is predominantly Catholic and its government is conservative and pro-church...In recent weeks, the ruling rightwing Law and Justice party has described the LGBT rights movement as a danger to Polish families and children. It seemed to be tapping into a belief held by some Poles that liberal values have been forced on them as a result of Poland joining the EU 15 years ago". It should come as no surprise this very public scandal played out weeks before the very contentious May 26th European Parliament elections "where the ruling Law & Justice party is portraying itself as the savior of traditional values on a continent that has lost its moral compass. After pro-EU opposition groups teamed up for the ballot, the government is seeking to energize its core electorate to take part in a vote often affected by low turnout" explains Wojciech Moskwa for Bloomberg. “Law & Justice has always stressed its close links with the Church but never on this scale and certainly has never used this tactic in an election campaign,” said Beata Laciak, a sociology professor in the Institute of Public Affairs think-tank in Warsaw. “The party is trying to convince Poles that their religion is under threat.” _____ The take away: As usual this is not about religion. This is also an attack on Christians who believe in love an acceptance. There is a tide of growing conservatism and nationalism in the world and queer people are being used as a scapegoat. We have to talk about it and call it out or things will get worse.
